Default Keith Black Conversion

Punching out my 2004 883 to 1200: using the Keith Black KB272 pistons (10:1 Compression): using the stock cams, stock heads, stock muffler, stock A/C with a K&B filter.

Just shy of 30,000 miles on the 883C.

Putting in new S&S Lifters, rocker bushings, new rocker shafts.

I've run out of money.. (Had a $1,500.00 budget)

The Keith Black is a Hypereutectic piston, so timing is more critical.
Ping or Knock is not handled well in this application.

Need help with the learning curve.
How have you handled the timing issue?
Can it be done without buying another ignition Module?

What are my options?

Realistically how much HP and Torque can I expect from simply doing a basic conversion with the configuration above?

Thank you in advance,
(Asked this on another forum, but this forum seems to be where all of the best and most experienced builders from both forums congregate.

Welcome aboard !
I dont have good feelings about KB pistons or running the stock ignition.

Rocker bushings are probably a waste of money as are shafts
Why new lifters ?
How did you run out of money ?

Unfortunately, a number of guys have come to ask opinions about their build AFTER they already plunked down good money for 'less than best' choices... The heritage of the Sportster.org & XLForum.net site is that real users have posted real results (and problems) with implementing available choices...

There will still be good advice in implementing what you have...

$1500 is enough for a decent upgrade - if spent in the right way...

OP - Have you already spent the money???

Thank you to everyone that responded so far.

Yes, I have spent the money and the independent has assured me the Keith Black Pistons are well worth the money.
He also assured me that I do not need to worry about changing the ignition module.

As soon as I get my bike out of the shop I will be confronted with the timing issue and no money to resolve the issue,

I put the 2004 883C in the shop because of some excessive rocker tapping (Front intake rocker)

Decided to replace the lifters with S&S and there was wear on the rocker bushing.
In the process since the engine was torn down, we discussed the idea of sending the jugs out to have them bored and honed.
I could have ordered the Wiseco Pistons, but decided on the Keith Black Pistons because of the benefits and the lower cost of producing a cast piston vs a forged piston, (Money was tight and I was looking at the idea of making the right decisions at this point even though it was outside of my budget to do the conversion).
I also figured that in my application I would be happy with a conservative 30% increase in power.
Now the money is spent and I will be in survivor mode for the next 6 months paying this off. (Retired, fixed low income).

So, I have thought about ebay and finding a used ignition module for a stock/factory 2004 1200.
I see that several ads say they fit the 883 and the 1200.
I am hoping this means they are actually from a 1200, but would work for those poor souls who might own an 883 and would not care if the timing would be retarded a bit (29 vs 35 degrees).

But, my obvious fear is that these ignition modules were removed from an 883 and would be identical to the one I already have.

I have thought of butchering the tab that locks down the timing and sliding it back 6% in the hope that will resolve the issue (retarding the spark). Or hoping there is an after market part that resolves the issue and allows me to use the original ignition module.

I cannot spend money I do not have, but will be having a few garage sales to pay off the repairs I've already committed to. Should be getting my bike back later this week.

If I am not building for power but just a minor increase, then I am sure the KB272 will be happy (Once the timing issue is resolved)
I do not run the engine hard and like to do about a 1/4 throttle spin to 4000 rpm before shifting with an occasional full throttle run to 5500 just to have a little fun.
