So after some digging, found out the c clip for my detent plate fell off. The plate itself was all gnarled up, glad I took a look at everything before it got really bad! Just ordered the new plate as well as some other parts, should be back on the road in a week and half or so!

Here's some info about the Shifter Detent Plate:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...e_the_trapdoor

While you have it down, you might want to look at your clutch - Check and/or replace the Spring Plate in the center of the Clutch Pack. Also Check/Replace the Release Bearing.

http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...vo:priclutch01

Maybe check the chain tensioner.

Small world! Lancaster County is a beautiful place as long as you can get past the cow manure Thanks for the added info! I’ll be sure to check up on a couple things before I button up the primary again. Parts won’t be in for a little while (didn’t know how long Ronnie’s Harley took to process and ship parts), so might as well since I have all this time on my hands.

Hey y’all so my parts JUST came in now, which really sucks and seems very uncharacteristic of Ronnie’s Harley.
But regardless, I have 2 questions:

1) i decided to go with an e clip and washer over the stock circlip. The only thing is, I have a washer that makes the plate be tight up against the shift drum pins without any wiggle, and one washer that allows for a little wiggle. Which is better? Does there need to be some “wiggle room”?
2) As I’m testing the shifting I can shift from 1-3 perfectly fine but it gets hung up at 4th gear on the detent plate lobe. If I follow the service manual to a T when reassembling everything, is this okay to have? Will I be okay with putting everything back together and it will shift fine when I get it running?

Sorry for a late response. I would go with a little wiggle room.
Too tight and it will press on the e-clip and may 'push' it away too much.

When shifting a tranny when the bike is NOT running you need to rotate the gears so the dogs will line up.
