Exactly. It's piece of the top to a 1-lb coffee-can.

One more trick Until You Correct Fin Interference’ wrap a Tye Wrap loose around the long lower tube, use the loop to pull the tube slightly away from the Cylinder and install the Clip, yes three hands would be nice but you can do it , cut the the wrap and go Vroom Vroom down Main Street

Spring collar wasn't catching on anything. Only way I got it to get back in there was to take my angle grinder and grind some material off of it.

Wonder how long it'll take to get the feeling back in my thumbs

Wow! That sounds rather drastic Staniel; at least to this "Ironhead Newbie".

But, if you don't mind me asking... What prior work did you do, that led up to this retainer clip problem upon reassembly?

Had you removed the tappets, pushrods, tube covers and seals? Or simply lift the tube covers to adjust the tappet clearance?

I do hope your thumbs are soon back to normal.

just went thru this myself.went from cork gasket lower and upper tubes to o ring types and had one hell of a time trying to get the retainers back on and there was no hitting cylinders.ended up die grinding and filing the retainers to get them to fit.and they do.you wanna talk about sore thumbs?for years i been wrapping them with masking tape and that helps.glad i'm not the only one.and no leaking
