Left side shift doors have a notch cast into them to allow the shifter shaft to pass through the left side of the case. So, thos doors are easy to spot.

But they will still work on right side shify bikes.

There are quiye a few different iterations of the door but most changes are very minor. There are some for XLH's and different ones for XLCH's. There are early and late versions of them but as long as you don't particularly want to run a cast primary cover or convert from right to left t doesn't matter.

There are also aftermarket doors. Cast iron ones from Trock and Ally ones from Burqghardt. These really aren't necessary unless your trying to bulletproof your engine.

The best thing you could do for your trans and engine is to fix the weak C/S boss area.
Not that expensive or difficult and a guaranteed failure point eventually. (Catastrophic)


Yes I've had that fix done to my cracked 72. Looks like the guy did a pretty good job too.

No it's totally disassembled having drain hole issues welded, porosity Glyptal coated, new bearings, whatever else comes up. Too much to remember lol.

Oh wait the M/S bearing is being replaced, yes. Looked like the case had been stored outside and the rollers rusted little divots for them to rest in.

just understand that a new main shaft race will have to be honed to correctly fit all 23 (standard size) roller bearings with the main shaft in place. if you are doing the assembly and you find that 22 fit but not 23, then it needs to go back to be clearanced a bit more.
