I found a nice original front fender for my '83 a couple weeks ago, so I went a little retro with the XLX and put the original tank and seat back on it. First pic was Friday when I finished and had returned from a gas/shakedown run, second pic was early Saturday morning, cloudy and 35 degrees. I rode to breakfast with some friends and took the scenic way home, and that was enough...lol

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

Actually did this Saturday, but installed a set of Firebrand Rip-Rod slip-ons on my '19 Custom, as well as flipped the mirrors. Was kind of worried about going with the smaller exhaust, but they look great, and the sound is amazing. It sounds like how a Harley-Davdison should sound from the factory (in my opinion, of course)

Although today I did help my buddy install tuner, filter, and exhaust on his Indian Scout. Talk about a pain in the rear to work on. For example, seat and fuel tank have to come off to change the air filter.

Shoulder pain (rotator cuff) & the return of colder & wetter weather has limited longer rides for me. Did a fvourite one last month through Blackpool, St Annes, Lytham, Preston, Southport, Crosby to Liverpool. Birdwatching at Marshside Southport, saw Sir Antony Gormley's statues at Crosby, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Back through Ormskirk & Burscough, formerly HMS Ringtail a Navy airfield in WW2 where Dad discovered a secret as a teenage air cadet, Curtis Helldivers being tested by the Navy. After many accidents they were never used & passed on to Australia. Now it's a large shopping site with a memorial statue. Got a pie & coffee at the supermarket & bought some sausages. Back through to Preston & home to Thornton

I left the Sporty at home and rode the FXLR. It was wet roads and a mist/drizzle all of the 50 miles to work.

Thanks! It's the OEM seat that came stock on the 1983 XLX, a one year only part.

I changed my fork suspension fluid. Even though it only has 10K miles on it, it is 14 years old. The stuff was solid black and stunk horribly. I locked the front wheel in place with a ratchet strap attached to the footpeg brackets and lifted the bike on my jack just enough to make it level and lighten the front end.
I removed the caps first to allow air in as the fluid drained and it all came out easily but it did take about 15 minutes for all the dripping to stop.
I replaced the OEM caps ("with a little help from my friends" holding down the springs) with the aftermarket ones from J&P Cycle with the inner fill cap so that I won't have to endure that agony again. This means I won't have to remove the caps or handlebar the next time.
Even though the owner's manual and "blue bible" say the capacity is 11.6 oz., only 10 oz drained and that is the amount I replaced.
It's supposed to rain tomorrow so I'll have to wait to see if there is any difference in the ride.
