When to change primary chain?
2008 Custom 1200. For the first time ever there was noticeable wear on the primary chain and it was easy to adjust it out.
The FSM is very helpful in stating the chain needs changing if it is excessively warn. Very helpful!
How do you know when the chain is excessively warn just looking through the inspection cover?

dont think you will w/o havin outer primary off
long as there's oil and proper adjustment, most cases that chain will outlast the motor
dont go too tight

+1 mr. rock
chain in hand. either measurement or droop test.
holding the chain out horizontal (sideways) it should be fairly stiff and straight, the more wear to more droop.

I you have to adjust it every 1000 miles, time to change it. Primary chain should at least work for 5000 miles before adjustments.
When they start elongating, they get out of adjustment faster.

Bunch it together; if any links do not completely relax replace the chain.

How do you do that by looking in the inspection cover, read the question first post.

All chain runs will have a tight spot.
Adjust the chain to spec at the tightest spot. Then find the loosest spot and compare the deflection dimensions. Personally I use 5/8”-3/4” discrepancy as my tolerance.
Stock power, well lubed and proper adjustment will lead to long life. Stroker, drag racing and poor maintenance drastically affect lifespan.
