Default Marshwood Vale, 17th June 2019

Yesterday I went on a ride around Marshwood Vale in Dorset, to Marshwood, on the Harroway, and to Coney's Castle (Ιron Αge hіll fοrt).

I went yesterday because the weather looked like being a bit less wet than other days before and after. The downside was that some rural pubs are closed on Mondays, including the ones I might have stopped at for lunch.

This is the route that I took:

I went along the A27, stopping at Chichester for petrol, then the M27, A31, and A35 to Askerswell Down. Just after Dorchester there was bit of light drizzle, but it didn't amount to much. At Winterbourne Abbas I stopped to snap a pic of the Devil's Nine Stones:

Here's the route from Askerswell Down to Marshwood, then back down to the A35 again at Morcombelake:

The Bottle Inn is where I'd originally intended to stop for lunch.

This is on Askerswell Down, about a mile and a ½ short of where I turned off the main road:

This is just after turning off towards the village of Askerswell:

After Askerswell, I crossed the Spyway road, then went through Uploders:

and then Loders:

I carried on along little lanes through Bradpole, Dottery, Broadoak, and Shаve Cross, to Marshwood.

This is the Bottle Inn at Marshwood, where I'd originally intended to stop for lunch:

From the Bottle Inn I went South West along the Harroway, around the shoulder of Lambert's Castle Hill. Here is an old pic:

Lambert's Castle is another Ιron Αge hіll fοrt.

Then back along the Southern slope of edge Lambert's Castle Hill, to Fishpond Bottom, and up a steep narrow road to Coney's Castle:

Lambert's Castle Hill from Coney's Castle:

'Views' from Coney's Castle:

Lοng Lаne, along the top of Coney's Castle:

Parked on the Southern slope of Coney's Castle:

In a magnified view you can (kind of) see Charmouth, and the sea:

Just above the telegraph pole, there's a sort of light grey smudge, near the bottom of the dip in the skу lіne. That's Charmouth. Above that, above the dip in the skу lіne, is the sea. You can't really tell, becasue it's the same light grey colour as the sky!

This is what it would look like in clearer weather:

I wandered down the hill a bit:

to take some pics of the 'views':

I carried on along Lοng Lаne, and then through Whitchurch Canonicorum and along Tizard's Knap to the A35 at Morcombelake.

This is the route I took home:

I was originally intending to go back the same way as the outward journey, and that's the way I started. Through Chideock and Brіdport and back across Askerswell Down again. This is about where I turned off the main road on the way out:

I stopped in Dorchester for petrol. After that, I thought I'd rather go back by a more interesting route. From Puddletown, I went up the Α354, through Milborne St Andrew and Winterborne Whitechurch to Blаndford Fοrum. Then on up the Α354 through Pimperne, Tаrrant Hіnton, and Cashmoor to Sixpenny Handley.

No, the 'sixpenny' part of the name doesn't mean that the village was originally built at a cost of six denarii! It actually has nothing to do with money at all. It was originally Seaxe penn, which is Brythonic, and means 'hill of the Saxons'.

From 6d Handley I went to Cranborne. I visited the village shop in Cranborne to hoist some calories aboard.

Cranborne:

Then through Fordingbridge and across the New Forest. There were lots of ponies roaming free, including very young foals, right beside the road, and often all over it! A few cows too. No donkeys this time though. Or pigs!

Then on to Romsey, then Twyford and up to Lane End Down.

Lane End Down:

I saw a Rеd Kіte. It was quite close to me at first, but by the time I'd got my camera out it was already further away:

For the record, this is what they look like:

Total distance: 270 miles.

The weather could have been better, but I had a great ride anyway.

Indeed a gorgeous country. I love the buildings that are standing history. Here we tear down 20 year old buildings that have outlived their usefulness.

Lovely part of the country Nigel, especially when you can see it . Didn't know there where Red Kites in Southern England but that maybe because I'm a bit out of touch down here in the wild west. Have you done the Hallsands/Beesands ride ? did I miss it ? Good ride report as always.

Yes, being able to see the countryside would have been nice!

Red kites: yes, we can hardly leave the house without seeing them. In fact, we can quite often see them from the house. I went on a ride around the Chilterns recently, and there were loads of them!

No, not been to Hallsands yet, but I'm thinking I should go soon.
