Default 1998 883 spits and sputters at around 3000 rpm

Bike was running fine.
The other day it began to spit and sputter and finally quit.
Negative wire fell off the battery. Looks like the shop forgot to install a lock washer and "new battery" like they charged me for.
Anyway the screw fell on top of the case so I was able to finger tighten it and make it home.
I re installed the cable using a lock washer and took it out for a test.
Now when I roll up to around 3000 rpm it starts to spit and sputter and back fire.
I pulled the carb and tore it down and it looked OK, just a bit of carbon on the slide but everything else looked OK.
Flushed the tank and replace the petcock and screen and installed new fuel line and made sure vaccum line was intact.
Re installed the carb with new gasket fitted properly to the intake manifold.
Ran it with the air filter off and verified the slide is working.
Seems fine up to 3000 so I can make highway speed but something is not right and I do not want to cause damage by running it this way.
Could a loose connection to the battery cause some kind of electrical problem?
I bought the bike this spring at a local independent dealer who was brokering the bike for a 2nd party and the dealer claimed he checked the old battery and found it would not take a charge. He sold me a new battery and installed it with out a lock washer and come to find out the new battery is in fact not new new, just new to the bike new as it has over spray from when someone was painting and the red tag on the top is badly faded from sun. Just something hanging around the shop as was the "new" petcock and carb.

Just a thought, check your spark plug wires, especially the connectors on the spark plugs. I once had the rear plug ferrule unthread itself enough to break the connection intermittently at a certain speed and kill the motor completely.

I am replacing the plugs this morning. Also pulled the seat and will pull the tank to double check all the wiring.

On models before 1994, there were many grounds to the frame throughout the devices. It is important that each device is well grounded and that the batttery negative cable is in good condition and properly tightened at each end. As the RPMs rise, so does the vibration, which will negatively affect any broken or loose connection that might others intermittently work.

You may benefit from this section of the Sportsterpedia:

When you're having issues with the electrical system, use this Sportsterpedia section about
checking the battery cables, voltages and grounds - DO THIS BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE:

Pay special attention to this section:

And you might check the condition of the Cam Position Sensor (in the nosecone) and it's wiring:
