The VOES is essentially an electronic vacuum advance. The 50's cars had vacuum advance although not electronic. The vacuum advance of the fifties predates the EPA by a couple decades so it wasn't developed because of an EPA mandate. Pretty sure performance at the time was the main goal, not tailpipe emissions.

Emissions may have had something to do with the VOES being put in Harleys but I think performance was the main consideration. Same as it was in the fifties.

Vacuum advance cans improved gas mileage and part throttle running. They added vacuum (or MAP, two sides of the same coin) advance to a centrifugal advance curve set for full throttle timing. In the USA cars got emissions regs starting in 1968, Nixon gave us the EPA in December 1970.

i see the Ultima has a few maps to choose from, is there one ready loaded that might be a good fit for my aplication (84 ironhead with andrews flowmaster no voes fitted or even grounded & baffled drag pipes?

i will eventually fit a voes when i swap to CV because its got an easy vacuum take off.

i think i understand the Voes and it acts like an old vaccum advanced distributer . but i dont have a good enough understanding of when do you need more advanced or retared timing at what load and when does pinking occur ect thats why im unsure if i should leave it grounded or un grounded and what map to choose.

bit more looking about i found this for an ironhead starting point... my thoughts in green

SW1 OFF regardless of whether you have a VOES!!! ( im going to leave ground to the wire )
SW2,SW3 OFF, OFF I had progressively worse performance as tried higher numbered curves (looks to be the most aggresive curve with highest final value says 80-96cui))
SW4,SW5 ON, OFF I never exceed 5000 RPM, but i want 6000 available for passing big trucks on windy days on two-lane hiways, when i see on coming (will prob go down on this to 5500rpm)
SW6 ON single fire

Just a note on your choice of single fire. Are you aware that single fire requires a special coil or usually 2 coils to make that work?

Feeling your pain supermotolew, I fitted the ultima single fire kit on my '79 last year, with a long thread here about the VOES and the ultima set up. Persevere as it is a good set up , albeit the instructions are a bit unclear.

Ok got the unit fitted today peice of cake maybe took an hour tops. i still need to static time it, theres a new battery on charge and i need to collect some crimps to crimp the HT lead connectors for a test. currently the Voes is not grounded yet. i see in an old post Ironmike did not ground his and run map 1 ok as a starting point. id be happy just to get the thing running right now.

if anyone has experiance with what map to run with the wire grounded or un grounded for a nearly stock bike id be keen to know

UPDATE .. bike is alive fired right up on touch of the button and first rotation in years! Pops a bit if i blip the gas unsure if thats timing or airleak voes is still ungrounded and on most advanced map 1.

Hi Again everyone,

does anyone have any input on which ultima map i should be using? with or without the Voes? im currently using map 1 (purely because it was recomended for the smaller capacity engines in the manual)
