It's true, You do learn something new everyday. The hole thru the pin is bigger on one end. About 1/4" on side to 5/16 on the other. I never noticed that before. The ones I have don't have a straight taper but a series of steps.

Any idea why? It seems to serve no purpose in the engine. Maybe it has something to do with the wall thickness rigidity when it's pressed into the gear or some other purpose when manufactured.

I cut a round block off plate from 3/16 plate. I use the 2 gen bolts with a couple nuts to bolt the plate in place.

I used a piece of fire wood and a C clamp to hold it over the hole.

But of course, I forgot to re-install the timing plug, and hosed down everything on that side of the shop with Harley blood!

was coming home on leave from colorado in the early 80s, just this side of baker oregon when the timing plug blew out, sounded like a helecopter, stopped in rufus, bought a boat drain plug, it was in there for years, 77FX

Back in '69 I was riding a fully faired Ducati single to Bathurst for the races.

Somewhere west of Penrith the oil filler plug that I had forgotten to tighten blew out.

The oil pumped up through the filler spraying the inside of the fairing, the bubble and my face. It was hot oil and I was lucky it only blinded me a little.

I had just passed a small gas station so I walked back to ask for some help and oil. The owner was sitting in the office holding his head in his hands. The oil company had just foreclosed on him and he was in no mood to help anyone. "Go away" is the polite version of what I got.

I went back, and while I was standing next to the bike some guys stopped to check out the bike. WHen I explained my situation they offered me a quart of oil.

I found a tree branch the right size, whittled a plug and rode the bike home.
