Default Very Nice Build

I am currently starting to rebuild and redesign a 1986 Sporty. It was my father in laws first Harley and he got me into riding. I had a few sportys and a Vrod that I did a lot of work on. When my Father in Law passed away last year I bought this bike so I can keep it in the family. I don't really care for the cruiser style so the cafe style is perfect for me. I love the bike you built and plan on using portions of it as inspiration on how I want the bike to look. Gotta get those shocks first thing. I plan on building it with my sons to eventually hand down to them.

I'm curious about that Speed Merchant Triple tree. Did that tighten the rake up or shorten the wheelbase at all?

Default Aftermarket Triple Trees

Normally unless rake is built into the triple trees such as on a V-Rod they do not change the rake. If you shorten the front forks or raise the rear end with longer shocks it will tend to decrease the bike's turning radius and let it turn quicker on the twisties. You are in effect decreasing the bike's rake slightly [without welding on the steering head].

Default Rake and wheelbase

An afterthought: Decreasing your rake [by welding and changing your steering head angle] also makes for a shorter wheelbase which also quickens the handling. The reason why Sporties handle so much better then Big Twins is because of their shorter wheelbase and considerably lighter weight! Most Sporties come stock with a wheelbase around 60 inches.

Motor should be dry and ready for assembly soon.

Fresh set of Burly Clubmans get unwrapped. Internal wiring on this style of bar has always been a nightmare so we capped the ends. Now you can work the wiring though the hard corners. Makes it a ton easier to wire them. Obviously stock length wires are plenty good, so pulling the wiring out of the connectors, feeding it through the bar and reinserting it into the connector takes minimal time.

It got tossed into the freezer for a little metallurgy lesson (wife not stoked). As it turned out the bearing fitment was not as tight as the factory stuff and it probably did not need to spend theday with frozen pees, but better safe than sorry (ummm, sorry hon).
I'm having the same problem with loose trees with the speed merchant ones. how did you fix this? the pics no longer show.
