A full set of P cams can perform well. My late friend Steve ran a 61? Sportster with a set of 3 1/4" Dytch barrels (63") and nothing else. Stock DC carb, P cams, Shocks replaced with struts for the drag strip day. A 16" rear front 21" spool, The rider Steve about 150 lbs and super rider. At Sears Point he ran an 11.80. That day, every run was in the low 12s or better. I don't know how much 1320' you've seen or done, but that is hauling ass.

It can be a serious mistake to try and tailor make your engine with Cams X, Pistons Y, and heads Z. You put on a set of straights and the thing just turns into a riding nightmare. Falls flat on its face until the cams come on at 4,000, then it becomes a handful. Hard to start opens the door to all manner of issues to solve. The magneto Sportster was a very sophisticated engine in its time. Roller tappet cams, hemi heads, large valves, high compression for the time, Trap door transmission, roller bearings and needle bearings. Until the Japanese 4s came out, it ruled the performance class. It was a refinement of the KR which dominated racing for years.
Can it beat a modern Japanese bike? No, accept that and use what you have.

I'm not a racer but I do understand the difference between peak horsepower at high rpm and useable torque for normal riding. That's why I wanted the P or R5 cams instead of the Y cams. More power down low where you actually use it 90% of the time.
