The bottom fitting (oil feed) should go to the rear of the oil pump, and the top fitting (oil return) should go to the front of the oil pump. The vent (should be at the front of the cam cover) will go to the air filter. Read up a little here:

ironheadjunkie wrong vent I think he is talking about is the one in the back of the cam case, that one should mount fairly high on the oil tank , Nikki

The fitting at the lower right in this pic is the gravity feed for the inlet side of the oil pump. The upper right fitting is for the oil return from engine coming from the scavenge side of the pump. The small elbow on top is the tank vent. On mine, it has a hose attached but I can't see where it goes. Possibly to the cam chest.

The return line goes onto the 90 degree fitting just above the oil pressure switch.
The feed line is at the back of the pump, attached to the 45 degree fitting.

my 80 has a oil filter (don't know if the 79 has one or not) the return line from the oil pump goes to the filter and then from the filter to the top of the oil tank. The vent which is the elbow on top of the tank goes to the cam chest just in front of the chain sprocket it is also a smaller dia. hose than the other 2 lines. the hose fitting on the cam cover at the generator goes to the air filter.

Following this thread, the 67 XLH engine I'm replacing with what I think is a 79 is plumbed a bit different. WHAT I HAD on the 67 was tank to pump. NO RETURN on pump. Return fed off top back to tank. VENT was plumbed from later model vent fitting I installed above transmission.
Now what I HAVE ON THE REPLACEMENT. tank to supply fitting on the rear of the pump. Return will be from the fitting in the front of the pump to the tank.

Here is where I get crossed up. The VENT FITTING on the engine case at the cam chest is now unplumbed. And the transmission top vent goes to tank. Once I get this figured out we can move on to the other hole in the generator housing part of the cam chest cover
