Default 91 883 sporty died while riding, will not crank.

Hey fellas,

Working on my buddies 91 xl883. Little different for me compared to my 88 as far as wiring...looking for some insight

Heres the story,

We were out on a ride about 30 miles in or so and the bike shutoff, lost spark, and he coasted to a stop. While trying to mess with it on side of the road, everything has power but it will not crank.

I had a similar issue on my 1988 where I lost a ground up on my handlebar clamps. Repaired ground and solved my issue. His bike is not wired the same. I have pulled the tank, and seat to inspect and don't see anything out the ordinary. Battery is sitting at 12.5volts.

Any idea where to head on this one?

Thanks.

Dying and starter not operating may be two different problems.

Battery voltage to starter solenoid?
Everything has power?
Is there power to coil primary +?

What is condition of both ends of both battery cables?

"Will not crank" has different meanings to different people. For some people, it means the starter won't engage and turn over the motor. For others, it means it turns over fine but will not start. Please clarify.

If it spins over but won't start, check the timing cup. The timing cup hubs like to fracture. There's a steel billet piece available to prevent this.

12.5 volts is a pretty dead battery. Charge it or jumper it or swap in a fully charged (12.8+ volts) battery and see if it starts.

12.5 is not dead should start. The starter does not engage what so ever. I’ll have to look at those links to inspect grounds. On my 1988 lost the ground on handlebar clamps that caused this same issue. As far as any changes to the bike there are none.

If headlight on for a minute, 12.5 is OK.
But 12.5 on a battery at rest is considerably discharged

State of Charge (AGM battery)
12.8+ 100%
12.6 75%
12.3 50%
12.0 25%
11.8 Zero

What is voltage while trying to start?

Voltage does not drop telling me signal or ground is being lost. when I get home from work I’ll do some digging on a schematic but this bike has had some electrical done by someone who didn’t take much care with it. I supposed I could pull switch assembly apart and send 12v signal through bars down to starter to eliminate the switch taking a crap.

Does the starter not even "click" when you hit the button?
