I have noted that several people have mentioned SAFETY - a battery giving you lights at all times and better lights than just running from the generator.

But if safety is a concern for you ...... what in God's name are you dong riding on a motorcycle at all ?

I believe (just my opinion) that HD built the CH without a battery ignition for two reasons.
The mag on it's own weighs a little less than a battery. A sleight gain there.
Battery ignition systems are prone to more problems. More complex = more problems.
This was a RACING bike and everyone knows that magnetos are for race engines.

Battery's on XLCH's look no worse than saddlebags on the same bike.

Oh........ Yeah.
