For what it's worth, helicoils should not loosen. As with everything else, they have to be installed correctly and this is a no brainer for those who have done it a thousand times and dealt with the 'damn if I knows' later.

I would hope folks that are building jet engines would be using good quality machines with great knowledge of how to use them. But, just a blanket statement saying they will not loosen...

In my shadetree endeavors, I have pulled helicoils out with the fastener and I've had them walk out of the hole. No one has all the knowledge and the right answers at every stage of their life. It takes some of us longer than others.

By the time I figured out what I had done wrong, I had already formed my opinion on not using helicoils unless I just had to. So, there are other options and they will all work as you stated.

The pre-drill has to be correct else you will ultimately cut looser threads for the coil installation. This condition will risk unbinding of the coils when too much torque is applied to the fastener and allow more vibration during use which could beat against the aluminum threading between the coil and the engine and allow the coil to back out using the pre-load of the fastener. This can also allow the coil to 'walk out' of the hole when the fastener is removed.

Drill bits can't always be trusted not to open up a hole slightly bigger than the printed number on the side and if it is being done with a drill motor, chances are the hole either won't be completely straight or will be wallowed out bigger than it should which also ends in a looser fit binding of the coil in the hole.
