When I've adjusted mine, I turn it in till it touches, turn it in another 1/2 turn, back it off until it's loose and turn it in till it touches, then back off 1/4 turn. Someone once told me that tightening it another 1/2 turn helps center it or something? Not sure, but I don't remember having any problems, on any of the clutches I've adjusted, other than using the wrong lube.

I have been very lightly gripping a screwdriver between thumb and pointer and as soon as I feel it touch, I then turn it back the other way 1/4 turn.... Perhaps I should be turning the adjuster screw in a little farther than I have? I have noticed that it can be turned farther in past the point of where you can feel it initially touch, and the drag is still very minimal.
Exactly, and Toejam has an excellent point too. The book is a guide written by someone who may explain things differently than you are used to, and reality is all in the translation from those words to your fingers. I always recommend that you play with the parts, examine the crap out of them, over think it, under think it, and once you can see the parts moving in your head, then you know exactly what to do. When things go wrong, you can see the problem in your mind before you open the case.

By turning it in further like Toejam is saying, you are possibly allowing the balls to find the bottom of the ramp grooves, and not doing that certainly could account for a bad adjustment. I always run the adjustment in and out, it's in my nature (I overthink everything, ask George).
