Default 35mm Kayaba Fork Disassemble

I am having problems removing the allen bolts on the bottom of a 35mm Kayaba forks from a 74 XL. The internal piston assembly keeps turning. I have attempted to remove with both the forks off the bike and the spring removed and on the bike with the spring in place. Is there a trick to hold the piston assembly.

best method is an impact gun for removing. it won't spin on you that way. otherwise you'll need to jam a wedge shaped piece of broom handle or the like to keep it from spinning. i prefer the impact gun to this.

Loosen the cap screw with the fork tube assembled. The pressure from the spring holds it tight.

Thank you for the hint of using an impact gun. Spun the bolts out easy.

I thought the forks where Kayaba, now I am not sure. Outside looks like Kayaba, inturnals look more like Showa. No marking on the fork legs??????????

Showa picked up HD in '75. If you can post pictures of the parts and internals I can tell you if they're Showa or not.

The FSM shows both Showa and Kayaba forks with exploded diagrams, so identifying them should be a no-brainer. Contrary to popular belief, HD used both, depending on what was in stock at the time of assembly. For instance, my 1977 XLH has Kayaba forks.

Don't use red locktite when assembling Blue only or better yet none.
Use a new copper washer or at least flip over the old one.
