My 1991 FSM says 28 ounces in one section, 32 in another, and 40 in another (does no one proof read?). I just use one quart. Have no use for 4 oz of spare oil. 32 oz brings it right to the weep hole on the back of primary, so that's what I use.

My 2013 Owner's manual shows:
Transmission (approximate) 1.0 qt 0.95 L

Service manual says (with the bike upright)
Add 1.00 qt (0.95 L) of FORMULA+
TRANSMISSION AND PRIMARY CHAINCASE LUBRICANT
through clutch inspection cover opening. Verify
that lubricant level is even with bottom of clutch diaphragm
spring.


The specifications sections shows 1 quart.

When I did mine, It was barely dripping when I put the plug back in.

Thanks for links.
I was also thinking the higher lube level might induce a little foaming too.
But it is splash lubed. My level should be a little higher than it has been but still closer to where HD says it should be.

It looks to me like getting the oil level to the clutch spring would put the clutch basket with the primary chain and sprocket in the oil. Maybe it will reduce my chain and sprocket wear, likely the some of the iron.

Time will tell, maybe next year I get a whole 10K miles
I'll need some down time for that though, I will need tires and brakes too

I think the point is that splash turns to churning when the oil is too deep. It doesn't help the lubrication but it increases frictional losses.

Ideally you don't want the clutch siting in the oil either, as it will create clutch drag. When I used the level hole rather than going simply
by volume it drained about an ounce or so of oil and the cold shifting immediately improved. I suspect the quantity HD recommend is for
a dry gearbox. It's your call.

So, what lube are you using next?

The current Sportsters do not have a "level hole" just the service manual and owner's manual saying to bring the level to the bottom of the clutch spring. That is what I did this time. It may very slightly over filled, I doubt my bike was more than 2 or 3 degrees past level. an angle of 3 degrees for a length of 10 inches would be a height difference of ~0.5".

I'll try to remember when I adjust the clutch in 5000 miles to check the level on the side stand to see where comes as a reference.

I am running the Red Line 75w-90 now.
Either Formula+ or a 20w-50 motor oil just for comparison
Might even buy SYN3.
