New pressure plate arrived today (from the USA, about 20$ plus the same again postage)

Using the old modified plate it was so easy to get ring and circlip clearance.

If i ever have to use it again, (hopefully not!) i will file the tang sides down a little to give a bit more wiggle room.

Leaving it until tomorrow before i fire it up to give the thread locker time to set fully.

Nothing against the country, damned fine engineers, but it was a bit of a surprise that all the new XR parts came from Japan.

Thanks for the update. I can't wait to try your idea. The Jim's tool I have needed modification right out of the package to work at all, and the amount of pressure that I feel while cranking it down is a bit unsettling (I can picture the bearing breaking away from the plate like yours). Catching the spring tangs closer to center like you did will have to lower that tension considerably. I'm going to try an old spring first rather than a pressure plate.

That Jim's tool, if its the same one I've seen, only pushes on the spring in 2 places barely half the circumference with a narrow surface. I can see where it would take more pressure.
Idk, guess I'm just lucky because I found it was as easy as Hammer's video makes it look with the motion pro. Full circle contact 1/2" wide. Easy to tell when it was bottomed out.
I was going to make a tool myself but found a brand new motion pro at an estate sale for like $29 and figured why screw around making something. Buy the tool made to do the job rather than screw around for hours making one and was glad I did because it was that easy.
Nothing wrong with making one but nothing wrong with the right tool either.

I personally have no issue with paying for a service, I was actually paying Photobucket $20 a year or so due to the amount of photos I had. However, raising the cost to the amount they did and the way they did it was bad business in my opinion and I refuse to support them.

Not only did they raise the price to a ridiculous amount, they also took away the ability to download entire albums.

I agree - I don't think anyone in this thread is suggesting you have to abandon what works for you --- but some folks have had problems using the typical compression tools - Not just the OP... Others have complained about how much pressure they had to use to get the spring compressed...

Using something that starts the compression closer to the spring fingers should definitely reduce the amount of pressure required to compress the diaphragm spring enough to push the locking ring in and release the snap ring - and that is better for the Release Assembly bearing...

Fired it up today and all seems well. It felt like it engaged closer to the bars so i whipped the derby cover off to check adjustment, but all was fine i think.
Had try it on the road as it was a cold but blue sky day (a welcome break in all the rain we have been getting) all seems perfect. Soon got used to the new slightly different grab point. So all good.

That is what the cable adjustment is for, you use it to fine tune the point where it starts to grab (usually a bit closer to the bars than mid way). If you set it to grab closer to fully out then it will start to slip sooner as plates wear.

Adjustment screw sets the maximum amount of free play, and the cable adjuster fine tunes that grab point by taking some of that free play out. They work together, but you can't get the cable to adjust past the full amount of play that you set using the screw. When you pull the lever, the cable first pulls out the free play that you left in there, then it pulls the pressure plate. Visualize this and you will never have an issue with any clutch on anything for the rest of your life.
