I'm dealing with the flimsy shift detent clip on my '03, they are prone to breaking.
You will know it by false neutrals and hard shifting. Mine let go at about 8,000 miles.
While i'm in there I will be changing out the clutch and getting rid of that spring plate.
Those are the biggys for our vintage.

I think it's DOT 5, so should be fine.

I bought an 02 1200C(my 2nd) 2 years ago with 5700 miles on it. 1st one had 64k trouble free miles on it when I had to give it up.
like you said, battery, tires, both oils & check all the rubber/plastic hoses, then stage 1 if it's not done, maybe better shocks... it's like brand new, ride it, I am!
19k & counting

I bought a 1997 883 about a year and a half ago with 5K on it. Have over 25K on it now.

I replaced engine oil, transmission oil, tires, brake fluid, brake pads, rotor (was all galled up and had no braking power) and front brake line. Lubed clutch and throttle cables. That's about it. Oh and I just replaced the oil drain line, it had some small cracks and was leaking no matter how tight I screwed the clamp.

My daughters 1997 Sportster had 42,000 on it when she got it, has 52,000 on it now. Bearing in the clutch release plate went out, throttle cable rusted through and broke. But I swear her's runs better than my bike does. Doing a VIN check on my bike it went 16 years without an inspection or registration renewal. I think sitting without use or maintenance it hard on these bikes.
