Default Am I missing a front wheel spacer?

2002 Sportster Custom

Recently had my tires replaced by a local independent mechanic with good reviews. Looking over the bike this morning, I'm wondering if I'm missing a front wheel spacer. The fork is mighty close to the wheel hub, MAYBE 1/16" clearance? Is there a spacer in there that I can't see, or is it missing?

Thanks - the parts diagram does show a spacer, but I'm not sure if it's meant to be visible between the fork and the hub, or if it's recessed into the fork tube or hub.

Basically, I want confirmation that something is wrong before I go back to the mechanic.

it looks to me like you're missing a spacer and a dust seal.

**update**
If you can hold on about an hour I can get you a pic of the wheel and fork of my 2000 custom for reference.

I forgot how much the camera on my old phone sucks and why I use a real camera (which I didn't bring with me today). Let me try again after I get out of my next meeting.

Thanks for the pic!

Hard to tell - IS there a spacer visible in there? How close is your fork tube to the hub?

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on Axles & Bearings:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...k:evo:wheels01

Check your year & model for Outer Bearing Spacers...
2000-2007 19“ Cast 13 Spoke or 19” / 21“ Laced or Profile Laced Front Wheel

Left:
43617-00A alum. - Width: 0.520“
Right:
43358-00 alum. w/ 3 'V' notches - Width: 0.140”

You could release the pinch bolt & make sure the forks a relaxed & straight (not pushed together out of alignment) - The axle mounts to the left fork solidly - the fork is then pinched to the axle head on the right...

Well this is as good as it's going to get given the crappy lens on my phone. It'll at least give you an idea of how much space there is between the hub and fork slider and the arrow is pointing right at the spacer that is sandwiched between the bearing and the step in the axle.

Thanks everyone - I'll have to look a bit more closely, as it's not quite clear if something's missing or not.
