Default primary chain adjuster install 1995 1200

bought a new style ( thicker bottom plate )primary chain adjuster, i don't know how to install it in the primary cover. the long bolt going thru the case won't turn to thread thru the cover. on the old one i was able to turn the long bolt to thread it out of the case.

Is the problem with alignment of the bolt (perpendicular) to the hole? Or a problem of the threads?

Take the locking nut off the old adjuster & see that it easily threads onto the new adjuster - To prove the threads on the new adjuster are the same pitch as the old one...

Then look at the threads of the hole in the case to be sure they are not damaged.

I believe there is a proper direction to place the adjuster in the cover - I believe the nylon cover is pressed onto the steel plate - The side from which it is pressed onto the steel plate should go toward the primary cover.

This should prevent that nylon cover, in an extreme case, from sliding off (not likely) into the primary cavity.

the long bolt threads thru the cover good with the nylon and the plate removed, its when the whole thing is in place that you can't turn the bolt thru the cover. if i loosen the top lock nut the bolt will turn and i can get the thing installed but the top nylon and plate are loose. 1995 xlh model

Pictures might help --- By your description, it sounds like an alignment (perpendicular) problem - but if it doesn't quite fit as expected...

Once you loosen the top nut & put the adjuster in place, can you wedge a screwdriver along side & against that top locking nut in order to hold it while tightening the bolt to it with the allen wrench??

I think # 3 the long bolt should turn freely with # 4 tightened down # 7 is a bushing that i think should let the long bolt turn freely when every thing is tightened down. i may have gotten a bad after market part? thanks for the replies
