Yes. Lead acid and LiFe batteries both put out less when cold but LiFe batteries take the bigger hit.

Doesn't start on the first try? Leave the ignition (and headlight) on so there's some drain on the battery which will warm the batteries' internals and bring its' output back up. Then hit it again. Not a big deal but something you need to be aware of with a LiFe battery.

I guess my question is whether having it on a trickle charger will but futile in those temperatures: do I have to bring the battery in to charge it in warmer climate, or is it no problem having it sit in the bike, on a tender for a couple of weeks at a time?

Leave it on a charger and you'll have no problem. LiFe batteries have a (very) low self discharge rate but the problem is the black drain the bike has because everything isn't really off when the ignition is off. HD has the dubious honor of being the industry leader in how much the the not really off system drains... Just use a good LiFe charger like an Optimate. I picked up and Optimate TM-291 and a TM-471 (2 because my R9T will also get a LiFe battery when its' battery dies) on e-bay very reasonably by being patient.

I pull my battery in the fall so I get to experience reinstalling it every year.
Two years ago I had a horrible time with the terminals loosening - usually the hot, one time lost the negative bolt (speedo kept reseting).
I think the main problem was the cables vibrating and working the bolts loose.
I wound up forcing the cable against something then tightening it. That way the cable is braced against something solid and wont vibrate.

I've read somewhere on here about getting the more flexible cables can help.
Get one slightly longer to help installations, too.

Both of those may help, you might also think about running a small zip tie around the post cable and fastener. There are some pictures on site as well as in Sportsterpedia. Hope this helps you.
My 2000 was especially bad about it, actually the positive cable broke in half. I made up a new positive cable from some tinned multi stranded marine cable, heavier gage and a couple inches longer. Not been a problem these last 20 years.

My bike is an 05. It's now 2021. The OEM battery was probably made in 04, for an 05 model year bike. I've always parked the bike in my garage if I'm not going to ride it. Then the night before I intend to ride, I plug in the OEM charger. So for 17 years, the OEM battery has been on the bike.

Shopping for a lithium battery, got me to buying a lithium compatible charger. I bought the NOCO charger. And I bought the SAE connector. I had to try it. I plugged it in to the 17 year old battery. The next day, the bike fired right up with a 17 year old battery and a fresh charge.

Now I won't have to buy a lithium battery. That charger did whatever it was suppose to do with the battery. The 17 year old battery is just fine.

I went with a ScreamPower from amazon, same supplier as Tesla and 520 CCA that fit in the same hole as OEM. I chose a SCR12BS scemower and boy that thing just crank the engine like your connected to the Hoover dam.

LiFePO type and it come with a tinny charger that work for this battery. The wiring just fit as OEM; left side positive when sitting on the bike. 131$ on amazon right now. Don't forget it come with a charger (cheap but made for it).
