The carburetor running out of fuel at exactly the same RPM regardless of gear and the engine not missing a beat as soon as I shift eliminates that possibility I think.

Throttle plate opens fine.

The pickup in the nose cone looks fine and it failing at exactly the same RPM every time doesn't really seem plausible.

A loose ground or such would not always be at exactly the same RPM either.

Plugs are fine, the thing pulls like a train until that specific RPM then goes soft. Not like the rev limiter now that I've changed settings for a higher limiter rpm. The thing just goes flat and the rpms just hover around 5500. I'm thinking that these old valve springs now being pushed further than they ever have give up the ghost and go into float mode. The coil is another possibility but I'd have to replace that to find out. So I may be replacing a coil, valve springs, swapping carbs. Lord knows.

Just an informational note here - The Speedo & Tach seem to match if the circumference of your rear tire is 76.6 inches (= 827 revolutions per mile).

This is in the range in which 130/90-16 tires are available. So, depending on the exact brand and model tire and tread wear, the speedo & tach match for 65mph being 3000rpms.

That does not address what the tach does above 5000 rpms, but it seems reasonably accurate at 3000 rpms.

Take the tach off and take it to bed, slip through and out the other side, reinstall and see if that helps. I do it all the time when I’m having a bad day!

because it stops at same rpm it makes me really curious where you are set for ignition timing. i suspect it is late or advance not working.

It has a Dyna set on curve 4 for a total of 30 degrees advance static timed per the manual. Also has the factory VOES with the DYNA #1 Switch turned off per the manual. And the VOES is operating as designed.

im thinking theres only so many reasons for what you have and i still think it could relate to timing. maybe see what happens if you advance slightly. its easy to be off on static timing. late timing would also make it run hot.

I'll have to wait to get my top end parts back from Hammer and will be back at it.
