Default Hammer 1275 UPDATE...

Okay folks. Sent my cylinders and pistons to Hammer. According to Dwayne they were a bit out of spec as far as piston to cylinder wall clearance. He did not give me specs. They sent me another set of jugs fitted to my pistons, new rings already gapped and all installed in the jugs. I didn't really get into the blame game with them, they sold the cylinders to me at a very discounted price. Fair is fair.

I got the stuff around 1pm and had the bike running by 5pm. At this point it has fresh (again) cylinders, new lifters, valve springs, the Dyna ignition and wires, new plugs, freshly built CV, the Reaper cams, new bronze oil pump drive gear, new oil sending unit, conventional 20w50 oil, a fresh tank of 91 octane.

It fired immediately, new lifters tapped. Following the heat cycle procedure the lifters made noise until the fourth heat cycle. After that nice and quiet. Went for it's first spin and all was good. Let it cool, then went for about a 4 mile spin and all is well. Kept it under 3k with some 1/2 throttle bumps and engine braking in decel. Feels fine right now. I'll take it easier this go and see how things develop.

So that's where it's at.

I'm still curious because it seemed to run fine before too, until I broke rules and ran it hard. I'm still not sure if it is gonna have the same top end rpm issue. Guess I will have to wait 495 miles to find out. That's gonna be hard.

OIL: For break-in purposes, any low cost grade of 20W-50 oil will be fine. We actually use the Wal-Mart branded stuff that comes in gallon containers. After break-in (see below), change your oil and use your favorite brand of high quality 20W-50 motor oil, preferably something formulated for air-cooled V-Twins.

Yup, I used the Walmart super tech 15w40 to break in my 1275 kit and followed the break in process pretty closely (it was hard…).
Switched to Amsoil 20w50 and now have almost 2000 miles and no problems, no oil burning and the oil stays golden brown.

Sorry, it's 20w50. I took it for another spin today. Seems like the 45 pilot is a bit rich, doesn't like any choke at all but it's been pretty warm here. I'm gonna leave shit alone. It's running smooth and feels a tad rich but I'll give it time.
