Default Hiccup out carb , tried everything I can think of. Please give me advice

Hello everyone , I've been lurking here a while but this is my first post. I've been reading and using info I've found here to trouble shoot my bike but I'm stuck right now and could use some help .

My 1983 xls ironhead roadster had been sitting for several years now , I've started it and let it run once every month or so over the last 3 or 4 years but have not ridden it. The big reason I have not ridden it was the clutch locked up when I moved it to my new house and with the new house and new kids I've put it on the back burner for a while now. Here is what is going on with the bike

Bike idles but barely , it will idle then hiccup and spit gas back out of the carb , it will recover from the hiccup and rpms will speed up to fast idle the slow back to normal 1k idle. Sometimes the hiccup will kill the engine. When I blip the throttle it sometimes responds normally and other times it stumbles , sometimes when revved up it will return to idle but very slowly. It does pop it the exhaust but that is rare.

Clutch is locked up , was going to crack open the case and fix it but the last few times I started it up it would not run like it should. First it would only run with choke on . The last time or two it started hiccuping through the carburator. I wanted to have the engine running like it should before I fix the clutch .

First thing I done was replace plugs , checked spark . Then I cleaned and rebuilt the carb. I kept the jet the same because it ran really strong before the issues and didn't want to mess with the jetting. When I disassembled the carb the previous owner most have pieced the carb together . The brass tube (jet tube ?) that runs up the middle of the carb is not the correct one for the carb , it's to long and you can tell it was forced in , the jet will not screw I'm all the way , when it is screwed in all the way about 1/4 of the jet threads are visible on the jet. It ran fine like this before so I'm not sure that is the issue. I've replaced the gaskets and cleaned the carb. Replaced rubber bands . Can not find any intake leaks , bike is stock from what I can tell . It does have drag pipes with baffles that came on the bike when I bought it. During testing I have the air filter removed for easy access to carb.
I've checked and adjusted valves also compression is good and even

If you have any advice please let me know

I am thinking about buying a cheap carburator on ebay to see if it's the carburator . If you could recommend a cheap carburator and send me a link to the auction. The reason I want a cheap one is just for the test . I would like to keep the original carb if possible.

Thanks so much
Justin

Check motorcycle salvage yards for the original carb. Also you could check timing and ignition components. Check out sportsterpedia.com
Good info on various carbs. And everything else for that matter. Good luck!

carbs are dirty port devises, aka, has air passages which most cleaners cannot touch. your best bet is a sonic bath with an aluminum cleaner and even then, no guaranty it will cure it if the passages are screwed up.
seen so many paper weights made from neglected carbs.

Post pics of the carb - Is it the stock carb for that bike, or a replacement of some sort?
