Default 1964 XLCH Generator

I have a 64 xlch that I am starting to restore. So far it has a lot of originality; correct double bung tank, solo seat, DC-12 carb, wheels, bars, etc. except for the wiring which is shot.

First snag, it has a model 65A 12V generator and from what I know it should have a model 61 6V. I have a Delco Remy regulator 1118989 for it but I am at a standstill until I get this figured out. Is it possible that someone replace the armature and field coils to change it to 6V? Or do I just go out and find a model 61?

I need some help, direction, or advice on which way to go. I am not that well versed in old electrics and appreciate anything anyone has to offer.

The two options that I see are:

1. Replace the generator with the correct -61 model
2. Use a 12v Bosch regulator in the place of the correct Delco Remy 6v

Since you say you are restoring it, I would recommend finding the correct generator.

Thanks for the replies, Magneto and Odinson! Cycle Electrics does make a replacement (DG2578) and I appreciate the lead. I am restoring the bike though, so I want to go with an original model 61. It's important to me that it has the correct stampings and from what I can see the Cycle Electrics generator does not (nor should it).

Anyway, I've seen a couple on eBay, my guess is that they would have to be rebuilt. Any thoughts on who can do this? I think I could but it would be a first for me.

Also, I have the correct regulator (1118989), is there a mounting bracket made for it? Or a pattern for one so that I can fab it? Really hard to find a drawing or picture of it that is clear.

If I remember correctly the 6v regulator mounts on the generator? The '66 12v Bosche regulator mounts on the back of the frame by the oil tank.

Yes it does. Just wondering if there is a bracket that it attaches to that then attaches to the generator? Just can't tell from what I have seen.

On rebuilding. I got. A lot of help from SporsterPauls. YouTube. There not difficult but making sure you have. Good parts. And pay attention to details. I found an armature USA Made Red Copper. I swap in a correct 65b. But going to rebuild the 65a.

I had my indie rebuild my gen and starter and he charged me $150 for both. You might get the job done for less as he was a middle man and had somebody he knew do them. Not sure how much attention they needed. I doubt it's rocket surgery, it just saved me some fiddling.
