Default How many racers are left ?

Just recently, not here but elsewhere, I've had a few people "Having a Go" at me, about my racing skills.

Mostly it runs along the lines that "your not racing a factory Suzuki so your efforts are just laughable."

I also got some stick for not setting a record on my recent trip to Lake Gairdner.

I know for certain that even after all these years I'm not the best pilot on the track.

I usually just point out that I'm 70 years old and I race what I know and love.

But all to often these are people who have never been on a race track. Arm chair racers who have never fronted up to a dummy grid in their life.

I have no problems with people who don't want to race. Some people don't even like sex. That's their choice. It's expensive, dirty, noisy, physically exhausting and often quite hard.
So is racing.

But it just got me curious as to how many other people out there in the world really ARE still racing Ironheads.

I will tell you that out of hundreds of entrants to Lake Gairdner Speed Week this year, I was the only sidecar entered. Not a Suzuki to be seen. Factory or otherwise.

So, how to find out ?

How many people here still race their IH's ?

Well I'm not racing an ironhead this year but I have in the past few years and I'm 66 with a new stroker iron head that's being put together just for the purpose of drag racing it only.it may go for a couple of nights out on the town but that would be an exception had most of the motor built in cluding bottom end with 4 13/16 ss flywheels and Lakeshore did the assembly including their port ing the heads and the jugs. To handle the longer stroke.i just had the heads dual plugged and it has the still brand new sifton cams from 1985 when we I had the bottom end built in,but life got in the wayand I put it away and just got it out a couple of years ago and have been looking for a chassis but it looks like it's goin back into the stock chassis and if i can find a 4-6 over swingarm it will be back together this year .but for sure by next spring at the latest.ive waited to long not to get it together and get to ride it.so this summer or next I'll be back on the ironhead where I belong.no more new sporty to

My days of long distance riding are over. Well, short distance even now. On the road anyway.
And that also prompted this thread a little as a lot of my mates have already hung up their leathers. Another has told me this is his last year.

I don't want my sidecar sitting in the shed forever but the number of potential riders is dwindling fast. If I'm not doing it I currently only have one possible racer who could/would ride it.

I'm afraid the Period 3 classes I race in are going to disappear. Young guys do not want to race.

Well, Gene,

One could be an active racer, a retired racer or sommat in between!!!

I did race, sprints and Bonneville, I have not declared meself retired yet, as you, 71 next January, but it's been awfully quiet since 2019...

But I keep accumulating race parts for a future sprint bike cause Bonneville is VERY expensive for a guy living in GB... I might ending not racing this sprinter, but for sure, if I haven't got a sprinter, I will certainly not go out to sprint it!!!

And I deffo will not accept criticism from guys that do foxx all but sit and talk...

Little secret... On all the bikes, street or race, that I have build over the years, I always do one thing not as perfect as the rest so the "sit and talk guys" can tell me all about it... Then I will ask them to show me what they have done that gives them the right to criticise me build... SATISFACTION as they blur away in the distance...

Patrick

I was an amator racer, going to the 1\4 mile strip like one or twice a year. I did a lot of outlaw racing; from roll-on or light to light. Also a guy did open his airport strip for some week end fun but has to stop it after an idiot, who fell, wants to sue him, he was convinces not to do it but the harm was done.

Racing professionally is very expensive, having fun is quite expensive and if you want some relative success get ready to spend $$$.

I'm still race electrical post; 6 of them is about a quarter mile and imagine I'm against the big Vince & Hines H-D nitro fuel dragster. Of course I'm the winner, and don't give a hoot of what other think about my effort.

I was following Ferrous Head effort at the down under salt lake, had a good time reading. That what count: having fun. For those couches racers who write bad sentences please accept my middle finger salute.

I suck as a pilot. That’s why I don’t enter. I have been supporting capable pilots now for over 25 yrs in multiple disciplines. I enjoy the pit work, as it is more of my realm of capabilities. Most of the guys/gals I support don’t even know what a 9/16” wrench is. Very few racers can support themselves at the track (guys like Gurney ect. are an exception.
Overall I do not support the couch racers comments, I know it’s not easy to take the green, nevermind make it to the checker.

On a side note Ferrous, only one hack running around Mid Ohio this weekend. He just went by

Sadly, that doesn't surprise me.

I never got to mid Ohio. My mate Phl Hitchcock raced there and told me I "HAD to come".

I got to Barbers and I got to Daytona. Back in 07/08. No Ironheads there.

What really disappointed me was that a couple miles away at Main Beach were thousands and thousands of "Bike People" who had no interest in seeing the likes of Jay Springsteen, Cook Neilson, Dick Mann, Reno Leoni or any of the other greats.

When you consider how good the XLCH was by 1959 as a potential race bike I just don't get it. For 10 years Harley had the best engine in the business.

To me it's still like getting to run a 426 Hemi in a class where everyone else is running a 283 Chevy.

well mr. ferrous, it really does not matter what others think.
ole oilfield hand, call me anything you like just not late for supper!
first off, it take a special person to put himself on a track with others, sorta like being a popo, especially nowdays.
in my younger days, we ran dirt but it was in heats and even though there were several on the track at one time, we were separated by time, each had their own judge & clock. when the made a circle track out of it and many were racing at once and people started getting hurt, i stopped.
now we had our own thunder road, 3 miles straight and in the country and zero traffic as it ended at the river and no one lived on the road, but today wall to wall concrete.
you raced according to whatever you wanted, 1/4, 1 mile up to the river. you could make a solo if you wanted. even the popo was there, and no issues, not today.
so kick back, tip your hat and smile at them, when they ask why, just tell them they would NEVER understand, they didn't live the dream.
