Default Finding problems after top end and cams...

So after I did the 1275 I wasn't happy with the stock D cams AND I was having a low oil pressure light after it got hot and at low rpms.

I installed Reaper cams and a bronze oil pump gear and a new oil pressure switch. It runs good but refuses to get past 5500-5800 rpms despite my Dyna2000 rev limiter being set at 6500.

I kept increasing the main and the wall kept getting softer but it still wouldn't rev past 5800 and would surge at that rpm. I also noticed that the front cylinder plug was whiter (leaner) than the rear AND I had a top end tapping.

I narrowed the tapping down to the front cylinder intake. A compression test shows 155 psi front and 165 psi rear with the engine cold. A leakdown shows both valves sealing on both cylinders and a minimal amount of blowby through the timing plug at TDC on both cylinders. Again, engine was dead cold.

So given the lean front cylinder, surging, lack of revs, tapping noise and lower front compression I am guessing that I have a collapsed front intake lifter. I didn't replace them when I did cams.

Does my evaluation seem sound here? Next step it to remove the front rocker boxes and inspect that front intake lifter.

Will the engine free rev past 5,800? I'd be wondering if the ignition module had actually accepted your increase to 6,500 rpm.

If you're pulling rocker boxes I'd also check for broken valve springs.

I did not free rev the thing to see. I've changed the rev limit up and down and nothing. I tore it completely down and have found nothing but signs of rocker shaft knocking on the front intake. That was probably the noise. So I will replace lifters and valve springs and put it back together. Running out of ideas

If you set the limiter below 5,500 and it still revved to 5,500/5,800 I agree with sportsterpaul that a chat with the folks at Dyna2000 would be appropriate. Seems like getting the module to accept rev limit changes has come up before.

I've spoken to the Dyna guys. The lowest rev limiter setting is 6000. I've put the stock ignition module in and get the same thing. I've tried limiter setting of 6000, 6500 and 7000 with no change.

Then you might pull the cam chest cover and check the cam timings while the rocker boxes are off. It's easy to miss the alignments by a tooth. It could also account for the front/rear cranking pressure difference and the ticking.

This may seem like a dumb question but it does happen.

Is the throttle plate opening all the way?

After trying 2 different ignition modules the cause is probably not the ignition. But something is choking it. Valve float can limit your RPMs but it seems that would be noticable?

With only 250 miles, the above does not jibe with Hammer's break in instructions.
