I am far from a Poser or a Profiler, but I do enjoy compliments about my bike. I put a lot into making it look as good as it functions (and it does both well) and getting positive feedback from people feels good. When I'm at the supermarket and some guy walking past tells me how sharp my bike is, it feeds my ego a bit. Then again; when some know it all jackass tries to tell me that Sportsters are no good for traveling, I get a kick out of showing him the odometer and telling him that it's been in 48 states and a few Canadian Provinces.

Yes; people do notice my bike.

That's normal. There's a big difference between that and those who are perpetually looking to see if they are being noticed and blipping the throttle with their un-baffled drag pipes to draw attention.

This last summer I did most of my grocery shopping on my bike(s) and got quite a few supermarket parking lot comments. More on the R9T than the Sportster. Soccer mom's seem to like the R9T, but one day an older guy (I'm 69 and he was older) had parked next to my Sportster and was waiting to show me pics of him running his stroker Ironhead at US 30 from years gone by. That was pretty cool.

Recently, there have been times when I've run into other motorcyclists in groups of two or more at gas stations or fast food places for pitstops, riding together on Harley's and metric cruisers of all ages who invite me to ride with them. This is the kind of attention I like to get. There doesn't seem to be any kind of bike discrimination around my area any more and I like it. They don't care if you're riding a cruiser, sport bike, adventure touring or whatever, just as long as it has 2 or 3 wheels with your "knees in the breeze".

Yesterday I was stopped at a T-intersection when a truck behind me honked. He honked again as I pulled out, then again. I thought maybe something had fallen off the bike, so I pulled over. He just wanted to tell me he bought the exact same model brand new, just loved it, and now all he has is a die-cast model of it.

Does that count?

I got a "Hey, nice bike" yesterday at Fin Feather and Fur.
They always seem surprised that it's nearly 20 years old.

Last week while I was at the 'bone orchard' two workers stopped and admired the color of my 1200 Custom: Dragon Fly Green. Of course I had to point out the factory option profile rims and tachometer.

I wish I could get less attention. The less, the better. I don't need someone to be able to give a good description of me to the police. Maybe it's not what they see. It's what they hear. I'm in the minority. I like a quiet exhaust. The louder exhaust doesn't do anything for me, if it adds 2 horsepower at the highest RPM. I would never be able to take advantage of the wide open throttle riding.
