Default modifying to metal oil tank.

Hello folks

Oil tank on my 2005 883 blew so I bought a used 2007 tank. Everything was dry for a while. Now it is seeping again at the seam on the left side.

A what is the capacity of the plastic tank?
B Which tank metal would be easier to install 2000 to 2003 or 93 to 96 metal tank?
C would 3 quart of oil be enough for the motor. Currently fill with 2.7 quarts.
I will need to make something to hold the fuse box.
I do not have a welder so I would jimmy a strap bracket.
Any comment will be welcomed.

When you said blew, do you mean it split at the seam, the same seam as the 2007 tank?
A: approximately 3qts
B: both styles would have to be modified, how much? I dont' know, because you have to decide what battery is going to fit in there. Rubbermount frame dimensions are different than solid mount frames.
C: Stock 2005 oil capacity is 3.2qts dry (no oil in it at all, like after a complete overhaul) otherwise it takes 2.4-2.8 qts at an oil change.

It seems unlikely that overfilling or oil pressure would blow an oil tank, so I would look for something that's causing excess vibration on your oil tanks.

Hi
Yes the seam split. I've been having problems with the crank so the bike is apart to get that fixed so i have time to check the possibilities.

Nibelugen do you know what year the relief valve was put on the oil tanks?

From what I can see it looks like a 2000 2003 tank would stick out an inch further then the plastic oil tank. But I don't have the exact measurement of the tank so it is hard to tell with out buying one if I could make fit.
Does anyone have the measurements?

J.

I did not remember exactly the year of deployment of tank with relief valve...
Here there are many guys more expert than me though...
Anyway you could buy a new oem one... sure it will be fitted with that (ask the dealer before order)...

Looking closer tonight the tank may be okay. The bike did puke oil from the case a while back and it may have splashed on the oil tank. I will need to pressure test.
There must be a way to put a 2000 metal tank on this bike.

There’s a way to do anything, but it’s a question of how much work and hassle it’d be, and whether it’s worth that.

If you buy a replacement tank, any leakage/defects should be covered by the parts warranty. Maybe try another stock tank?

Well I pressure tested the oil tank today. No leak around the seems.
So oil it must of sprayed when the bike puke oil by the crank vent.
I won't need a new tank. The one I have on is from a 2007 .
thanks for the help.
