If you take it apart and find it has too much play you could always simply put it back together and keep riding. Of course knowing there is two much play would be always in the back of your mind and you will start hearing noises that are not there...

On the other hand leaving as is you could ride in peace, but there is always that chance there is an issue... And if putting 40,000 miles on it ...

One suggestion, get an oil analysis done to see how much metal is in your oil. To be really effective you need a baseline and compare the results over time. Blackstone Labs is who I used to use when I had the high mileage engine

That's a good idea for the oil analysis. I did one I think around 20k miles? That might be a good reference point. I'll send one out soon and see what it looks like

The fact that you had one already helps as it gives you a point for comparison. I'll try to remember to post my last one when I get home, I cannot do so from work

I've got over 50k on my bike as a 1250, and another 30ish before that, so I'm just under 95k right now. Runs as good as new. If your current bike is fine, I wouldn't hesitate to throw on a 1250/1275 conversion and keep on riding.
