one of the first self propelled anti aircraft multiple guns was the german 2 cm flakviering 38...
during the battle of Casteldebole (Bologna), the hamlet where i was born, partisans were defeated 'cause the germans had at their disposal that very weapon, concealed on the other side of the Reno (Rhine) river...

more detailed:
Attacked by the Germans in the first days of October 1944 in Rasiglio (Sasso Marconi Bologna), the 63rd partisan Brigade Bolero Garibaldi suffered very hard losses. The invaders were very determined to disactivate it from a very important strategic position in the immediate backstreets of the front. After moving to the other part of the Apennines, the brigade received the order to converge on Bologna to take part in what was believed to be the imminent insurrection in mid-month.
The commander Corrado masetti "Bolero " and the deputy Monaldo calari "Enrico " decided to go to Bologna with the detachment of the command which were part of a score of men. Along the way, the partisans opened the road fighting, as in Ponte Rivabella (Monte San Pietro), where they destroyed a checkpoint.
In the night between 29 and 30 October the group arrived on the left bank of the Rhine between Tripoli (Casalecchio di Reno) and Casteldebole (Bologna), where a boat was ready to ferry the men to the other side. Because of the flood, the river was not crossed and the partisans hid themselves in the shed of a gravel quarry, to shelter from the rain.
Their presence was noticed by a whistled informer who informed the Germans.
At 13 o'clock on October 30, large sections of SS and German paratroopers surrounded the partisans who did not surrender and fell fighting, after resisting for over three hours. The wounded partisans were tortured before they were finished.
The only survivor that day of the entire brigade was Alessandro Ventura "Fra Diavolo"... because, living in Casteldebole, the evening between 29 and 30 he has had license to go to greet his mother. He intervened then in the battle killing an officer and wounding two soldiers. Then he had to withdraw.
He was lately arrested and shot by the fascists on the eve of liberation.
