Default Brake light stays on

I have a 1980 sportster that the brake light will not go off. When I remove both wires from the rear switch, both still have power going to them. Is this a short in the system?

One of the wires is the power which feeds front and rear switches.
The other wire is the switch leg, which is fed by both front and/or rear switches.
Likely the front switch is remaining closed

You need to do a continuity test on each brake light switch. disconnect the wires to the switch and test it, the one that still has continuity is bad.

cheap continuity tester at home depot around 6 bucks https://www.homedepot.com/p/Sperry-C...FUN6Ygod3osAHw

Also might as well start with testing front switch first...
Almost always that one causing this problem, had the same on my 82, good luck.

My 92 XL had the same problem with the front switch. Just dismantled and reassembled it a couple of times, seems fine now

I will check the front switch this weekend. Thanks for all the information on fixing this issue.

Did you push on the front lever (forward) to make sure that doesn't make the brake light go off? Old, gummy fluid can inhibit it from opening the switch. Had that problem with my Fat Bob.
