Default 2012 H-D new model: Sportster "Seventy-Two"

Found on an european Sporty message board, the new to be released Sportster in 2012, the "72":

Nice looking bike, wonder if it will be a 883 or a 1200!

So far I like it the best out of the entire current Sportster lineup. The only changes I'd make, just by loooking at the pic, is put a little more travel in the rear suspension and probably a new seat. Sorry, I like to be comfortable. Those bars look perfect and I like the classic location of the speedometer. I'd like to see it available in an 883 to keep the cost down & I'd like to see more pics.
Not to start another 883 vs 1200 debate but my 06 had an 883 and I was completely satisfied with that engine just the way it was.

The tank appears to be smaller than the 3.3 gal I had. If it is that would be negative for me. I can't see having less than 100 mile range for the rides I like to do.

I like it

if the "72" is what I think it is then it'll be a 1200

well, a 1179cc to be exact

I agree, not much new, last major change was efi in 2007 and then before that rubbermounting in 04.

All the rest of the stuff, nightster on through are just styling changes that were borrowed by HD from folks here.

Chop a fender here, add some chrome, or black it out, different bars, whitewalls.

The good thing is that standard parts will be available forever.

I'd like to see decent suspension available from the factory.

As far as the 72, not my cup of tea, but I like the look.

If the tank were smaller than the 3.3 gal, it would likely be a 2.2 gal tank. They'd have to retool to make it though. It's also not very practical. 90 miles between fuelings isn't great for touring. Hell, it's not even all that good for commuting. It would be a bar hopper. Which it looks, from the OP picture, to be a bit generic looking.

I think it probably refers to 1972 styling, rather than 72 cubic inches; like the 48 was supposedly named after the introduction of the classic sporty style tank in 1948 (though not on a Sportster).

Exactly. It seems sometimes that the HD design team are watching this forum to see what owners are doing to their bikes, then making them like that from new.

Steel, I was thinking the same as Phil on this one.

I was trying to figure out if there was some landmark 1972 Sporty that they might have pulled the styling from, but I can't think of anything and I certainly don't see anything that stands out.

I wouldn't mind seeing a limited edition factory "ironhead" look. Maybe offer a functional kick starter? But I digress.

I don't believe there were any eventful Sportsters in 1972 though.
