EFI - how to get the harley potato sound

Well, just writing to tell my experience about the EFI in Sportsters.

This is my quest to try to get the "Harley Sound" in a EFI bike, I suceed pretty OK, after lots of troubles.

I compare with a 2004 with Screaming Eagle II pipes, loud bass deep potato-potato, very Harley, but not loud enough to be illegal (here).

I got the Harley Sound in a 2008 1200 C using Screaming Eagle Street Performance pipes + custom inner baffles made from scratch in a car muffler shop here.

The stock pipes or the Screaming Eagle Street Performance pipes does not provide the classic potato sound, but more like a 3CV sound, so I needed to mod them.

The good thing is that you don't need to remap the EFI (if you don't change the A/C)

But, you still must do something, was expensive to me because the mech guys screwed it the 1st time, but after it goes right, you will love it

What I did, please check this graphics



Replace the inner mufflers of the Screaming Eagle Street Performance with a Screaming Eagle II clone custom made.
This will make the engine run properly, a little cooler (seat of the pants).
The only thing is that you will notice that the idle speed of the EFI bikes are more smooth and little faster than carburetor versions.
The sound is very deep, not loud like annoying loud, but lots of bass sounds, very deep and pleasant voice.
The good thing is that you don't need to remap or put any fuel manager.
I may put a A/C in the future and then you will need to remap or use fuel manager.

What you should NOT do:
Open totally the baffles (drag pipes-like), this will produce farts, bad performance, and horrible noise.

Hope this experimentation is useful for other EFI owners when modding their bikes.

Also, thanks for everybody that wrote to me to help me figure this.

Very interesting,.......

I'm lookin' to get that deep "potato" sound myself. Now, I'm not sure which way to go with my 883 EFI, but thanks for the tip and the drawings. Good food for thought.

I just drilled out the baffle caps in the stock mufflers for now. Nice sound, not real low but it's got that Harley sound.

On the potato scale it's a 3.5 out of 5.

I will try to record a video of the new pipes today, but I can show a video of the pipes sound before (using the stock Screaming Eagle Street Performance inner baffles).

The closest I've heard a modern Sporty get to that classic Harley sound is the Samson(?) exhaust on Oildripper's bike. Many, it sounds beautiful!

I noticed that there is a kind of "dimple" on the lower edge of the exhaust tip. Is this to hold the baffle in place?

Just did something like that last week on my SE Street Performance pipes

There are about 3x5, 6 mm holes in the inner baffle and i increased it to 10 mm and added 6x5, 10 mm holes to a total of 9x5, 10 mm holes.

The sound is really cool and i think the sound is much better than the sound on my V&H Shortshots

I did not open the "flap" or cut the end of the inner baffle, and i wonder if this will make the sound even better!??
