Day 11 Continued-

A panoramic shot to give an idea of how high up we are-

Mary with a range of snow covered mountains in the distance-

End of the line for the cog train-

Last time we were here I walked down to this look-out. The walk down, I guess it is about 50-60 yards, is easy...at 14,000 feet, the walk up is a bit of a different story. Anyway, Mary must have take 5-6 photos of it, teasing me to go down...I passed today. lol

We messed around at the top for a while, then got back on the TG to head on down a ways for lunch.

The TG is running really well. Last 111 miles we've averaged 35.6 mpg, and that includes the climb to the top here.

Note, it's 46 degrees...it's still pretty windy too.

Headed down, no better way to start than a sharp descending curve!

This is a fun road, with amazing views...note there's still snow here and there.

Mary in the mirror in a sharp left curve.

This pic gives a little bit of an idea of just how crazy this road is....looks a bit like a 3-D slot car track. My quick count is that there are 31 curves in this photo.

Mary in the mirror as we head into a sharp descending, cambered right U in the road. FUN!!!

Will finish up Day 11 soon.

Day 11 Concluded-

Headed down, same story, gotta stay on the road!

But it is just as much fun headed down as up...

WOW! I rode close to the edge for Mary to take a pic, but I did not look down...that's a long, steep, way down!

A look back, a little further from the edge. lol

Not down to the elevation where the trees are yet...

We're now in the trees, AND at the brake check area where they use infra-red guns to measure the temp of the brake rotors. If you don't know how to use your gears to control your speed, resulting in the brakes being too hot, they send you to the parking lot to let them cool off before you can continue down the hill.

We stopped at the same corner as a couple of year ago (when we rode PP with Scott & Karin) to watch folks thru this curve and to eat lunch.

Back rolling, still lot's more curves and fun...

...but I gotta wrap up Day 11, so here we are back at the entrance.

We started out for Scott and Karins, outside of Colorado Springs, but we got distracted by Cave of the Winds. It's just a short ride up, a look around, and then the very twisty road back down. Fun!

After that we are on our way to join up with Scott and Karin for a ride tomorrow to Mt. Evans and Independence Pass.

Day 12-

This is going to be a busy and long day! We're riding with our friends, Scott and Karin. First we're taking backroads to Mt. Evans, then thru Leadville, then up and over Independence Pass, then thru Aspen and on up to Glenwood Springs.

Leaving out early...

...almost thru the traffic...we were just here yesterday, this is the road between Colorado Springs and the base of Pikes Peak.

Fantastic riding all the way to Mt. Evans...

Even though the occasional 2 wheeler slowed us down in the curves. lol

Most of the riding was traffic free.

The TG's laugh at these signs...

30 mph seems like a more comfortable pace.

This is absolutely beautiful countryside! I think I already mentioned it a few days ago, I wonder if the folks in Colorado know how good they have it!

We're starting to climb higher now, seeing little spots of snow on the sides of the road....

...and seeing the snow capped mountains are getting closer and closer!

More on Day 12 coming as I have time.

Kevin, thanks for sharing, am taking notes as our proposed C.O.B.B. run in August will have us running the Northwest for 3-4weeks. So much to see so little time. Thanks again.

Cool! I have lots more to post. Hope you have a great run!

And you're so right...never seems to be time to see everything. Two biggies that we've left out of this trip is the Black Hills and Grand Canyon.

Day 12 Continued-

Starting to head up the "serious" part of the road...

...to the summit of Mt. Evans. It is in poor condition, and, as always, little room for error. But...

...the views are stunning!

Always good to see a fellow biker enjoying the ride!

A nice photo showing the treeline. Even though the trees can't breathe up this high, we are doing fine with the oxygen boost. lol

Past the treeline and into where it is cold enough that there is still plenty of snow and ice!

I started laughing when I saw this sign, because pretty much the whole road is damaged...

...but then we saw that there were some pretty good potholes...

...then there were a couple of these 10" deep trenches across the entire road...BUT, they did put rocks in them so if you placed your tires on the rocks in the hole you did not drop down as much. lol

There are a bunch of fun switchbacks on the way up!

Will continue Day 12 as time allows.

Day 12 Continued-

Continuing up to the summit. Here are a couple of photo's riding close to the edge of the road for some photo's...

...and another...

...this is a fantastic ride with...

...amazing views!

I wanted to touch the snow while riding...

...guess what? It isn't snow, it's very hard ice! Burned a bit. lol

Check out the view in the upper left of the photo....yeah, where the road just disappears into the sky.

Lotta mountains in the distance.

I did not count the switchbacks, but there were a lot, and they were all fun!

Just breathtaking views! This is a ride we'll always remember!

Hey! There's a traffic jam at the top! lol

More of Day 12 in next post.

Day 12 Continued-

As soon as we parked, Mary saw some Mountain Goats and went up close to get some photo's. This was the last photo she took...this one was starting to get to close for comfort. lol

We all ate our lunch up at the top, enjoying the views...but I discovered, we did not take very many photos at the top.

Here we are at the sign, 15 feet higher than Pikes Peak.

Left to right- Scott, Karin, Mary, Kevin.

There used to be a house at the top here...

It was destroyed in a fire back in 1979 and never rebuilt.

We're on our way back down now...looking up, you can see what is left of the Crest House.

Whole different perspective when we headed back down....

...we're encountering less slow moving cages too, so that is nice.

Saw this little guy on the side of the road in a switchback.

Either Scott & Karin, or myself and Mary....one of us is going the wrong way! lol

Will post more on this epic day of riding as time allows.
