a fella who's fairly new to ironheads asked me where to find bikes like this.

IH's are where you find them. Example:

68 xlch 010 by don rothwell, on Flickr

This is where this one started. This is a bike I bought from FL for the Thunderheads and Ceriani forks that I wanted for my XR replica. As a bonus I found this one had some 4 1/2' flywheels and hot cams.

After scrounging all the stuff I needed for my XR , I sold off a lot of the brick-a-brack from this one , put a nice lower end in it that I had already prepared for my XR project and built an XLR clone using some forks and stuff I had been accumulating for an XLR.

This was a good use for this bike since it had too much chrome and too many modifications to be a good candidate for a restoration. The other possibility was a KR hardtail but I'd already built one and hadn't done one of these.

Quite a change ,huh?

Blowupster- still have the black fender. Made the other from an old scrap pile fender that was messed up on both ends.

Barefoot- Yes somebody was not afraid to throw dollars around; should have stopped before he chromed the brake rotors though. With wimpy HA calipers and chrome rotors it felt like it sped up when you hit the front brakes.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

Pretty funny ... the Kosman rotors were better because they were cast iron. And then he chromed them ...

But overall, it was way nicer than average.

My 250 did a similar thing ... it revved like hell from ten to about 12,500 then got weird. The revs would go up but the bike would slow down. Never did figure that out
