Let's hope it is just the sprocket nut. I had a Ducati 900SS do that to me once, no damage. Hope a similar situation for your bike.

Don't want to bring bad luck but if the nut and sprocket are both turning while pistons are not moving it does indeed smell like the sprocket shaft is more than suspect... just hoping it broke "clean" and the key was not sheared ruining the taper in the flywheel...

All I can say is I am so glad it happened in front of my shop door.. and not on the ride Monday which would have been very bad.

Here is the broken pinion shaft from a few years ago.

the key won't be a problem here.they stopped using them in E81.L81> used commonized shafts using commonized tapers w/no key.

I been on the phone and dealing with people all day but I plan on doing a full tear down tomorrow.

One of the phone calls was to CJ Osborn that told me when he made my wheels they were the common small taper shaft and that if I send the one wheel to him he will put the heavy duty large taper shaft in my wheels which will fix my problem forever.. He must not know me very well..
Granted he said the shaft is $275 alone but if it saves my wheels and no more problems, then I'll be happy to spend the $$

Being a dude with access to nada. I'd have a woody for 275.00 dollars.

Well here is where I am with it

https://youtu.be/AN4-ReowDHU

Also found the pinion nut loose and some marks that make me wonder if the sprocket shaft came loose and made it push against the cam cover. I'll post a pic later.

He said no key just a larger taper, said a key would weaken it.
