Default newer exhaust fitment on an '89

so im building my 89 1200 into a café/bobber. i no i want a 2-1 exhaust. i love the D&D bobcat. but as everyone knows they only fit "04-present" but ive called around and everyone says the cylinders should match up but not sure about clearance on brake/pegs. has anyone ever put a "newer" exhaust on an older (86-90) XL? i can fab up my own hangers, i just wish i had one in front of me to test fit.
