HD are marked up 20% so there must be an additional incentive to dealers on 2009's.

Alternately some of the dealers STB is shopping will mark it UP (with freight, prep, accessories, and sometimes fees or premiums that are not listed, and will THEN mark it $2k off - but the "price" is still at or above MSRP).

Hannum's is pretty famous for that. Mikes Famous in DE is the king of that crap.

Anyway, it's approaching winter in a down economy, is it a surprise if someone really discounts a bike?

FYI we got our last Sporty from Hannums at more than $2k off MSRP, no freight or prep.

I bought my 2010 a day after it hit the floor at $1000 off.. I'm sure there's nice incentives on the '09's right now.. My point was, you can't base their 'true' price off them telling you or showing you a '$2k off' price tag.
The majority of 'em mark 'em right back up for freight, set up, 'doc' fees..you name it. They used to mark up the initial price of their bikes as well(and prolly will again as soon as the economy comes back to 'em), so I guess you could say HD dealers are now 'discounting' their bikes
The way to work against all this is to talk about, and negotiate the "OTD" price. That's the price you're gonna end up paying to get the bike, so that's the one you need to be concerned about.

$2000 off of 2009 models? The problem is that they are 2009 models. Does the dealer have this 'incentive' on all of his 2009 bikes? And everyone knows the 2010 XR1200's are far superior with their black levers and fancy steering stem bolt.

I was reading today about the Tokyo Motorcycle Show. It's a big show for all the manufacturers, and particularly HUGE for the Japanese, as it's right in their backyard. They historically roll out all the cool prototypes etc..this is the event where they usually show what their upcoming focus is gonna be on, as well.
Kawasaki didn't even show up! But Buell did?!?! Kinda ironic...
Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki all were highlighting "Transportation" and "Mobility" products. Yamaha relegated the previously highly touted cross-plane crankshaft R1 to the periphery of their display, and Suzuki didn't even bring any GSXR's! The GSXR is the cornerstone of that company, so that's a huge WTF?!?! Suzuki highlighted some Hydrogen fuel-celled scooter, and Honda was highlighting their scooters, 'transpo bikes' and robotic 'mobility aids'.
A Yamaha rep was quoted as saying the big bike market is on it's ear(no shock), but thanks to the transportation segement of their line, their overall numbers matched their '08's. He also stated that they don't expect big bike sales to turn around for several years.
I knew something was up when I saw Kawasaki's 2010 bikes. They should have unveiled a completely re-designed ZX-10(they re-design their cutting edge bikes every two years, and '10 was time for the ZX-10), but instead only made some transmission changes, and little else. Basically one step above "bold new graphics". They've got nothing that has the possibility of spurring sales for the upcoming year..
Basically it appears that they're all 'going green', and are gonna be concentrating on small displacement, fuel efficient, enviornmentally 'pleasing' transpo-mobiles.
The days of fighting over who's liter-class bike has the most power and turns the quickest lap time, are at least temporarily over.

YUP, big cooling trend with everything. We will probably see some down slide from some of these companies. Just hope HD hangs tuff, they made it through the big one in the 30's.

Think Harley will be OK this time around. They have a much better product line and marketshare then during previous economic downturns. They may have to cut production and prices till things turn around.
This really should be of no surprise. If people are having a hardtime getting credit for things like cars and houses. Sure as hell going to be hard to get credit for something that is not viewed as a nesesity.
