Getting the Right Dial Indicator?

The dial indicator doesn't have to be expensive.
It just has to be accurate, placed properly and to where the gauge body won't move.
The indicator has to be held in place by the stem instead of the back cover to fit properly in the lifter hole.
There is no room between the cylinder and the lifter hole for a mount in the rear of the indicator.

An indicator with the post attachment on the back will not fit in the lifter hole vertically.



The probe on the indicator has to be vertical to and inline with the lifter (or cam lobe) to give accurate readings.
Also to keep from bending the probe as the lifter rises.
It can be placed in the center or on the outside lip of the lifter.

It also has to have enough travel of the probe so it won't bottom out before you get the measurements you need.
The cam lobe will probably have more than a 1/4“ so an indicator with only that much lift will not work. A 1/2” probe travel will work;
But, you have to zero the dial before installing it to make sure you give the cam enough initial travel room.
An indicator with a 1“ travel works good.
You can set it down on the lifter 1 or 2 tenths, zero the dial from there and still have plenty of travel left for testing.
It gives more flexibility in setup.

For dial indicators with the mount on the back cover, you can replace the cover with tape to allow more room between the indicator and the cylinders.



Tape the inside of the cover, then cut around it. Remove the circle piece of tape from the cover, place the sticky side up on the back of the indicator.
Then tape that down. This keeps the sticky side from getting stuck on internal moving parts.




Make sure to leave enough on the sides to hold down the temporary tape backing.
Now this indicator can be used in the lifter hole (with the right holder).

would it not be easier to insert a lifter into the bore and forget the bore
with lite oil and the weight of the lifter, it should follow the lobe.
well, looks like in one jpeg, i see the lifter so scratch the above.
i like to use the mitutoyo digital indicator. have to use this to set the valves on a big cat engine. what is nice is you can do presets/offsets. you can plug into a computer via usb port to log or crunch numbers. very accurate to .00005

That's with a lifter in the bore.
The evo lifter sits way down in there when the cam is on the base circle.
See the second pic above.

I played Hell making a tool post for the indicator.
All mine attach from the back plate.
So I made this crude one of some flat stock nylon.

i see you are still fond of nylon, not that it matters, i like nylons on women (hope i didn't cross a line), hummmm maybe not since hunters around here wear them (think i need some visene to wash that image out).
i really dig the thinking out the box.
i will throw this out and you can shoot me down, i ran a crew of 68, 40+ year old babies, so i can take it. i would have used the threaded holes next to the lifter bores. a simple plate with a tube and set screw so i could set preload by sliding the indicator up/down. that way, it would fit hole to hole.
kinda glad this thread still has some kick!

I still have some scraps from projects past.

Don't wear em though.

I thought about the upper holes but in case I screw one up, the lower ones are easier fixed.
The indicator sits down in an almost press fit hole in the post so I set pre-load by pushing further down and it doesn't move.

I just finished this one.
I got some conflicting results and wanted to make sure it wasn't because of the nylon tool post.

Sure enough, it wasn't.
But, I like this one also. It's more user friendly.
Made specifically to bolt to the right crankcase but can be used anywhere.
