Default 1972 and 1973 c/cases are the same except...

...for the trans has the speedo drive deleted and a thicker wall there, right?

Because I can get a usable 1973 case to replace my cracked 1972 case and just move all my internal parts over to it, amirite?

Because the jugs fitment is the same for 1972 and 1973...these are the only two years they made these particular jugs/bottom end combination...

Just want to triple check before I buy it.

from what I understand the difference is in the heads and cylinders, the base of the jugs should be the same size and bolt pattern

L73 had a wider head bolt pattern:

Just possible cases need to be checked for alignment centerline (pinion/sprocket) shafts. Have seen it done without any issues.

Yes , you can interchange all internals except countershaft low gear. Your 72 top end bolts right on.

Your 72 gear with speedo drive won't fit. Get later gear or grind the speedo drive off yours. If you grind it off be sure to leave enough of a shoulder to contain the thrust washer.

73 - 76 cases are all the same.

I'm putting a 1939 new-to-me Atlas Craftsman lathe together and will machine a spacer for the rear axle and run the speedo drive off of there.

Will have the speedo cable made up special for my application. I think somebody on here has done it and it's "north of $100" which is doable. One of the big internet parts houses makes custom cables I forget which one.

I know the speed will read high but can deal with that or make a new speedo face somehow.

I think I can assume the "2-73" stamp means Feb 73 so I will have no troubles with fitment...
