Here's my 2¢
It all depends on the bike and how and where you ride. If you ride only on the paved roads and never in a bad environment definitely stay with belt. If you have a rocket and play a lot well then a chain it is. Now on another note.. if you ride like I do and go everywhere then a belt is no good.... a small pebble can pop a belt and major havoc ensued.
I ride on gravel roads and sometimes through water so no belt for me. One of my riding buddies popped a belt on a ride on a gravel road ... it looked like a bullet shot through it and then unraveled, was big mes had to pickup with a trailer and go to nearest dealer to repair.

Not sure the cause of the belt breaking yet looks like it just wore out. I don't know how old the belt was but I've had the bike 4 years now and never changed the belt. I was on a road the had just been chipped within a week or so. That may have been the cause.

When I'm sitting on the roadside with a broken belt it makes go insane. Think billy jack when the girl gets the ice cream cone shoved in her face. 100 miles out and not a damn thing I can do but call for help. Which is great if you have lots of friends . Myself I have mostly aquantinces. I realized long ago that if you truly have one good friend that you can count on you are lucky.

Low maintenance
Clean pants legs


Cons
When you're broke down you are screwed. Not enough pantyhose in Walmart to get you home .
Expensive when pulleys are worn

Chain

Noisier
High but easy and quick maintenance
Can get your ole lady's new white pants ruined.

Pros
Vastly cheap gearing changes
Looks...man.
Can fix with parts from bike shops, tracter supply, industrial supply houses

I don't ride on unpaved roads or drag racing anymore. So personally I love belt drive.
Belts are strong, quiet and need very little maintenance. They can hold a hell of a lot more horsepower then most people think. Keep your belt adjusted properly and don't drop the clutch all the time and you'll be fine.
I'd be willing to bet most of the premature belt failures can be attributed to too much or little belt tension. Most likely not enough tension.

That said, two of my three bikes are chain drive.

Only benefits I can think of for a chain conversion is, you can fix it on the road, it can handle more horsepower (well above 100hp), and old school looks and sound.

Stick with the belt. Much less, overall, problems.

Chain.

You're not fixing a Belt on the side of the road with a couple of Masters and a length of Chain (I keep about four inches in my tool roll).

PLUS, in a bind you can buy a chain at any TSC to get you where you need to go for short money.

I am lucky enough to have a bunch of friends that are more than willing to pick me up when I break down but I am always there to help them as well. I see the point about fixing a chain on the road. I also know that I love the lack of upkeep with a belt and this is why I am torn on the subject. Changing gearing is not an issue for me I don't race the bike I got a sportbike for that.
