Default Lowering an older ironhead

I am just about finished with the front of my 78.
To date I have:
1) Changed the front wheel to a 21" (laced new rim to my existing hub)
2) Rewired the whole dame bike (8 wires running it total)
3) Bullet headlight, risers and Apes
4) installed 3 degree neck cups (easier than I expected)
5) Shaved and powder coated the forks.

Now I’m working my way back. Being it’s a 78 I don’t want to chop it (hence the neck cups).
What I am looking for is a good solution to lower the back:
I am leaning toward lowering shocks but I can’t seem to find out exactly what will work. I have an 18" rear wheel w/stock struts and fender.
Thought about mounting the fender directly to the swingarm to aviod hitting the tire, but still dont really know how low to go.

Other option is a bolt on hard tail. I don’t love the idea of a bolt on (and would require more parts and work) but it’s not out of the question.

Any advice, options, photos or even a how to would be appreciated

If you want to go low, I have seen some guys on here with some pretty low shocks, they must only have about 2" of travel in the shock to be that low. I'm sure someone will chime in on what shocks they use. If not, post this in the 1957-1985 Ironhead section. More Ironhead guys looking at that section than on here, might get a quicker answer. The other option I can think of is a set of struts in place of the shocks. If you go this route I would definitely put a spring seat on there.

You should post some pics of your progress so far, sounds like a cool project.

Hi CG, I'm pretty happy with the neck cups. Easy to install and they kicked out the front a little without messing up the trail.
I didnt lenghten the fork but I did change the front wheel from 19 to 21".
Ill get come picts up soon.

I went with a bolt on hardtail on my '78, and I haven't looked back since.

Sure would like to see some pics of your bike with the 3 degree neck cups... Are you using stock forks?
