Default 1970 Xlch Transmission Problem?

Hello new to the forum. I have a 1970 XLCH kickstart only..well the other day I put the bike on the stand to do pushrod adjustment. Clunked through the gears to 4th with the plugs out like a usually do, did the adjustments and when I put everything back and when I was ready to to start the bike I could not get it out of fourth gear. I rocked it back and fourth...nothing. Now I am wondering if I should rip into the tranny or could it be something else? The clutch and primary have all been rebuilt about 2 years ago and I have had 0 problems with anything on this bike besides some carb issues which I fixed. Any suggestions?

Thanks

What feedback are you getting from the shift lever when attempting to downshift? Check to be sure the shifter isn't loose on the shaft and not actually turning the shaft enough to complete the downshift.

The shifter is responding normal whether kicked down or up, it returns back to its starting point. This is got me completely stumped seeing that it happened when the bike wasn't even running and I was shifting through the gears by manually spinning the back wheel.

Did you try to lift the back of the bike o a stand to be able to rotate the rear wheel in forward only motion while keeping the shifter down (instead of back and forth for a small fraction of the angular rotation) ? How does both (shifter and wheel) feel doing it this way ? Any noise from the tranny ?

Yes I have it up on a jack now. I have rotated the wheel both ways with the shifter down and nothing. I turned the wheel by hand and with the kicker trying to get it to grab and nothing. There isn't any noise from the transmission. I am tempted to try to start the bike with the wheel off the ground but I don't know if my knee would appreciate that.

sounds like the ball on the end of the shifter shaft came out of the pawl carrier.if you pull the shifter shaft outward, does it pull away from the case more than an 1/8''?

Nope I just checked. There's a little play side to side but no where near 1/8 inch. I am beginning to think I might have to pull the tranny.
