The trap door is the cover plate bolted to the case with 5 bolts. On the newer models where they eliminated that, you have to access the transmission by splitting the case (or so I hear).

on newer ones they eliminated the trapdoor by making it part of the cases. So now to get to the trans you have to split the cases to get to it. Many more hours of work.

Doh! I was looking at a 2003 XB manual and that tranny still has a trapdoor. My bike is an 06, no door. Wow, been working too much, need some garage R&R!

Looks like I'll get it to, need to split the cases on my Firebolt, having trouble with shifting out of 4th and into 5th.

Thanks for all the clarification...just takes some time for it all to click!

There's an on-line '03 Buell parts catalog HERE. See page 10 - "CRANKCASES". No trapdoor there - as I mentioned earlier, the fuel-in-frame models (i.e. XBs) lost the trapdoor.

No XBs I know of had trap doors except XBRR race bikes.
