I like this. It needs some work as you mentioned, but it's a good start.
I like the banners breaking up the round of the gear. That gear should be turned into a sprocket, or a tire as you mentioned. I think a sprocket would be better for the gear heads in us all.
The XL forum logo could also be wider and break into the gear/tire some. OR, you could drop the logo and replace it with just the engine because much of the logo is redundant in this layout. That would get the engine larger and more noticeable at distance.

So, if anyone wants to use any part of my design please feel free to do so.
Flybum, Thank you. I think your images have a great deal of potential as well. I like the way you used the complete forum logo. Wish my editor would allow me to do more with images..
Here's another variation of my design with a bit more color.

Loony, Brad, Very nice...
This should get good. Can't wait to see what others come up with. "Tweak, tweak, tweak..."
Have a great day, Jeff...

This is another good start. I would try to break up the circle to create interest, because a circle or a square are inherently boring in shape, but you have everything in the logo and it works well together, so I think there is room to work with this one.

Would like a patch if one exists, what was the final outcome of this contest?

If I wore leather, I'm more of a ballistic nylon, kevlar sort of rider, I'd want something like this.
