If the bike is stock it may need nothing.
Modified? Can't tell, may need tweaking.

sure it will fit, i ran one on my 1974 fxe. but in hind sight, probably the 40 would have been better. tooting around no issue but a long wot stretch takes longer, the 40 would help.

mikuni vm38/9 is not a carburetor, it's a VM38 with a specific set of internal tuning parts: pilot jet, slide cutaway, needle jet, needle (and clip position), main jet, air jet.
It's pretty close for many stock H-D engines. How close depends on what was done to the engine among other things).
If you're familiar with the VM you know that acceptable performance may be had with more than one different set of parts. The more time you spend, the closer you get.

well ok but mine is a vm38 -9 which as we ALL know is a vm38 set up for ironheads and fx's among others
all i asked is would it run on a 2001 sporty. mainly because i have a couple or three lying around and i dont like the stock one.
i'm not interested in performance and how fast i can go. i just want to burble about and enjoy the views and wondered if slapping on a mikuni is a possability

I believe you can get good results with the right adapter and settings.
Give it a try.
